1949-The Territorial Army was established.
The Indian Territorial Army (TA) is a second line of defence after the Regular Indian Army; it is not a profession, occupation or a source of employment. It is only meant for those people who are already in mainstay civilian professions; in fact, gainful employment or self-employment in a civil profession is a prerequisite for joining the Territorial Army.

Bell makes the first two-way long-distance telephone call between Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts.

World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 annually . The Universal Postal Union (UPU) was established in 1874 with its headquarters in Berne, Switzerland. It created a global communication revolution, introducing the possibility to send letters to any country in the world.

World Post Day was declared by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Significantly, 150 countries across the globe participate in the celebration annually.

Meera Shankar served as India's Ambassador to the United States of America from 26 April 2009 to 2011. She was India's second female ambassador to the United States of America, Vijaya Lakshmi Nehru Pandit being the first. She was succeeded by Nirupama Rao on August 1, 2011.

Perumanoor Gopinathan Pillai, more popularly known as Guru Gopinath (24 June 1908 – 9 October 1987) was a well known actor-cum-dancer. He is well regarded as the greatest preserver of the dance tradition. He is a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
