*In 1962,
Jawaharlal Nehru won another landslide victory in his third and final election campaign. The Indian National Congress received 44.7% of the vote and won 361 of the 494 elected seats. This was only slightly lower than in the previous two elections and they still held over 70% of the seats in the Lok Sabha.

*In 2012,
India, which has been polio-free for over a year now, was today taken off the list of polio endemic countries by the World Health Organisation. This announcement was made by the Health Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, at the polio summit 2012 here in the presence of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh.

Ravishankar Vyas, Indian independence activist, social worker, and Gandhian from Gujarat.The Government of India released postal stamp in his honour in 1984. Ravishankar Maharaj Award for social work, worth ₹1 Lakh, is instituted by Department of Social Justice, Government of Gujarat in his honour.

*In 1938,
Farokh Engineer,
is an Indian former cricketer. He played 46 Tests for India, played first-class cricket for Bombay in India from 1959 to 1975 and for Lancashire County Cricket Club in England from 1968 to 1976. Engineer was the last from his community to play for India, as not a single Parsee male has represented the country after him. He is portrayed by Boman Irani in the film 83.

*In 1970,
Mannathu Padmanabhan, was an Indian social reformer and freedom fighter from the south-western state of Kerala. He is recognised as the founder of the Nair Service Society (NSS), which represents the Nair community that constitutes 15.5% of the population of the state. Padmanabhan is considered as a visionary reformer who organised the Nair community under the NSS.

*In 2008,
Hans Raj Khanna, was an Indian judge, jurist and advocate who propounded the basic structure doctrine in 1973 and upheld civil liberties during the time of Emergency in India in a lone dissenting judgement in 1976. He entered the Indian judiciary in 1952 as an Additional District and Sessions Judge and subsequently was elevated as a judge to the Supreme Court of India in 1971 where he continued till his resignation in 1977.
