*In 1854,
Cowasji Nanabhai Davar opened the first Indian cotton mill on 22 February 1854. This cotton mill was called the “The Bombay Spinning Mill”. This mill was opened amongst opposition from the Lancashire mill owners. But by 1870 there were 13 mills, exclusively in Bombay.

*In 1978,
Yashwant Vishnu Chandrachud was appointed the 16th Chief Justice of India. Born on 12 July 1920 he went on to serve for a number of years finally retiring on 11 July 1985. Before becoming the chief justice he was appointed as Judge to the Supreme Court of India on 28 August 1972. He is also the longest-serving chief justice.

*In 1863,
Chamarajendra Wadiyar X, twenty-third maharaja of the Kingdom of Mysore. Although his reign proved to be a brief one, he left an indelible mark on the Kingdom of Mysore. 
He instituted the Representative Assembly of Mysore Kingdom in 1881. This was the first modern, democratic legislative institution of its kind in princely India. He sponsored the famous journey of Swami Vivekananda to Chicago in 1893. He gave primacy to women's education and founded the Kannada Bashojjivini School.

*In 1892,
Indulal Yagnik, an Indian independence activist, who purchased the Indian tri-color flag hoisted by Madam Bhikaji Cama from Germany to India Indulal Kanaiyalal Yagnik was born on 22 February 1892. He died on 17 July 1972. One of his best books is The autobiography of Indulal Yagnik.

Kasturba Gandhi, in full Kasturba Mohandas Gandhi, née Kasturba Kapadia, Kasturba also spelled Kasturbai, (born April 11, 1869, Porbandar, India—died February 22, 1944, Pune), Indian political activist who was a leader in the struggle for civil rights and for independence from British rule in India.

*In 1958,
Abul Kalam Azad, Indian politician and scholar died.Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin Ahmed bin Khairuddin Al-Hussaini Azad was an Indian independence activist, Islamic theologian, writer and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress. Following India's independence, he became the First Minister of Education in the Indian government.

 

World Scout Day is observed on February 22nd by all Scout associations worldwide as it was its Founders Day. The birthday of Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell (born in 1857), and also his wife Olave Baden-Powell was born on February 22nd. Robert Baden-Powell becomes a national hero during the Siege of Mafeking. The grave of Baden Powell in Kenya has become a pilgrimage site. Scouting family takes a pilgrimage to Baden-Powell’s grave in Kenya.
