Events that took place on this day in history 20 January

*In 1957,
Asia's first, Apsara is the oldest of India’s research reactors. The reactor was designed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) and built with assistance from the United Kingdom. The design of APSARA, a pool-type reactor, using enriched uranium fuel was conceptualized in 1955 by Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the father of Indian nuclear programme. The reactor, built with indigenous contribution worked at 1545 hrs on August 4, 1956, and this event marked the beginning of what is today acclaimed internationally as the success story of Indian nuclear programme. Later PM dedicated it to the country as Apsara on 20 January, 1957.

1914 – The first group of Transvaal Indian women satyagraha is after three months of imprisonment were released from Pietermaritzburg Prison, South Africa.

*In 2020,
K. S. S. Nambooripad, 84, Indian mathematician, academic and computer scientist.
He was an Indian mathematician who has made fundamental contributions to the structure theory of regular semigroups. Nambooripad was also instrumental in popularising the TeX software in India and also in introducing and championing the cause of the free software movement in India.

*In 2020,
Minati Mishra, 91,was an Indian classical dancer and actress, known for her expertise in the Indian classical dance form of Odissi. She was reported in 2011 to be the oldest-living Odissi performer. The Government of India honored Mishra in 2012, with the fourth-highest civilian award of Padma Shri.

Fareed Zakaria, is an Indian-American journalist, political commentator, and author. He is the host of CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS and writes a weekly paid column for The Washington Post. He has been a columnist for Newsweek, editor of Newsweek International, and an editor at large of Time.

*In 1982,
 Ruchi Sanghvi, is an Indian computer engineer and businesswoman. She was the first female engineer hired by Facebook. In late 2010, she quit Facebook and in 2011, she started her own company Cove, with two other co-founders. The company was sold to Dropbox in 2012 and Sanghvi joined Dropbox as VP of Operations. She left Dropbox in October 2013.
